Monster Making

My blog has covered the stitchery and the spangles, but I realize that I have not posted about my monster making.  Monster making is one of my favourite things to do, but it is something I really need to be in the creative mindset to accomplish.

It all started one day when I decided that puppet making was the path in life I wanted to follow.  I read up on how the master Mr. Jim Henson had made Kermit out of his mother's old felt coat, so I headed to the fabric store to find myself some felt.  I never did get so far as making a functional puppet, but I have been making felt "Mini Monsters" the last few years.  It brings me immense joy to cut the felt and hand stitch the little guys.  I do not use patterns, it's a very organic process, just my scissors, some felt, googley eyes and my imagination.

I made a biker tiki monster about a year back as a gift inspired by a biker tiki maker.  And maybe it was all the 1960's surf movies I have been watching as of late, because I had decided it was time for another felt tiki monster.  And suddenly before I knew it, a Miss Tiki Mini Monster was taking shape.  I used some textured brown felt, as well as contrasting stitches and highlighting tan colours.  It is soo horrifically cute!

I also wanted to share a few photos of some of my favourite Mini Monsters, that I have created over the last few years.  They are very time consuming, I put a lot of detail into them and take great care hand stitching all the pieces together.

I hope you enjoyed the above Mini Monsters.  I am always looking for new ideas and inspiration for my felt creations.  I still have a few monster photos in the archives and I will post more soon.
