Harlequin skirt and the antique mall

So, I did something I have never done before.... I ordered fabric online!
I know that does not sound like such a big deal, but I have always been the type of person who needs to feel the fabric.  Anyone who has ever been in the fabric store with me knows that I walk around touching and making swooshing sounds every time I find something that pleases my tactile senses. (yeah, I am a little creepy).  But I desired black cotton sateen.  It is my favourite fabric to sew with, and there was none in stock at the local fabric emporium.

I found some on fabric.com and read reviews and decided that it would be alright to give it a try.  I also ordered 4 meters of some black and white harlequin print cotton sateen.  I fell in fabric love at first sight and crossed my fingers that it would be as amazing as I anticipated.  And 2 days later, I got home from work to find a box on the front step.  I opened it up and was pleased to find the fabric of my dreams!

Now that I have my new Pfaff, I am no longer frightened of making machine button holes.  I decided the perfect project for a few meters of the harlequin print would be a button up gathered high waist skirt.  I used the same pattern from the project dingleball dress as inspiration.  I added a few inches to the width of the skirt for more volume and decided that pockets were a must!  I drafted the pockets using my own hand as a measurement and stitched them in at the side seam.  I made the waistband by measuring my own waist.  The most difficult part of the project was lining up the harlequin pattern, because Artie kept sitting on my fabric whenever I turned my back, oh Artie!

Oh Artie!

I had some really cute clear buttons with a black square in the middle left over from another project, and I decided that they would be perfect!  The button holes went in easy, except for the top one at the waistband.  The fabric was bunching in the feed dogs for some reason, but I eventually got it figured out.  It was a quick 3 hour Friday evening project, and I am very happy with the results!

I decided to wear the skirt out on a Saturday afternoon trip to the antique mall today.  I am always on the look of for an awesome new-old coffee table and perhaps a new-old dresser.  I did not have any luck in the furniture department, but I was able to find and amazing ceramic poodle pin cushion, a mid century teal and gold chip and dip and a slightly damaged lady head vase (it was very reasonably priced and I should be able to fix her up with a little paint and love).

A lady at the antique mall said she really liked my "get up", cute!

Amazing poodle pin cushion with original pins, perhaps I will replace the velvet.

Lady head vase, going to clean her up and use for makeup brush storage.

Chip n' dip, love love this pattern!

All in all it was an excellent Saturday!  Sassy Boyfriend also spent part of the evening teaching me how to throw a punch and hitting the heavy bag.  It is a lot more difficult than I thought it would be, and I will probably be very sore in the morning.  I think I will train with him more often, if he doesn't mind.

I already have another stitching project in the works, and I am still making resin pieces. So I should have an update on a custom pair of earrings I just did up for the mombot this week.  Have a wonderful rest of the weekend!
